Preliminary data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates the U.S. suicide rate increased in 2021, following two years of decreases.
47,646 people died by suicide in 2021, compared to 45,979 in 2020, representing a 4% uptick in raw numbers. The U.S. suicide rate for 2021 stands at 14.0 per 100,000 population, up from 13.5 per 100,000 during the previous year. Even so, neither the number of deaths nor the suicide rate approaches the peak noted in 2018.
A U.S. News Report on the increase reflects on the knock-on effect of the pandemic as both a factor in rising rates and increased public awareness about mental health and suicide prevention. Read more at https://bit.ly/3SH3Uww.
